  1. Job Purpose

Lead and direct the conservation and enhancement of Urban heritage including all its associated aspects, features, sites, areas, landscapes, standing and ruinous heritage architecture and places of cultural significance. Help to build national awareness of the great values of the urban heritage in line with RCU’s strategy of preserving and activating the rich heritage in the County of AlUla.


  1. Key Duties and Responsibilities

Functional Responsibilities


Develop the vision, objectives, strategies, and action plans for the conservation of urban heritage sites based on assessments of the architectural and structural features, the urban heritage context, the surrounding landscapes, and other elements of cultural significance.


Support surveys, documentation, condition, research and studies of the Urban Heritage from architectural, urbanization and historical perspectives and the Urban Heritage assets of AlUla and create a digital file for each asset, to include full survey documentation (3D and 2D, exterior and interior), photos, description, ownership etc


Assess the Urban Heritage significance of each asset in accordance with the Saudi Law of Antiquities and ascribe Category A, B or C and introduce more detailed assessment criteria if necessary


Approve policies for the documentation of the state of conservation of the urban heritage assets in AlUla County.


Identify key conservation issues requiring attention and prioritize plans to address those issues.


Oversee the Promoting of creation the urban heritage conservation and adaptive reuse guidelines for each tagged area in coordination with Planning and Design Department


Oversee and monitor conservation work including the removal, addition, rearrangement and other interventions to the physical structure and layout of urban heritage structures and sites of heritage significance in accordance with international best practice.


Review and evaluate development projects inside urban heritage sites boundarys and their buffer zones


Support the development and installation of exhibitions and displays related to urban cultural heritage and all preventive, interceptive, and emergency conservation programmes and initiatives.


Build and implement national awareness initiatives and programmes concerning the great values of the urban heritage in line with RCU’s strategy of preserving and activating the rich heritage in AlUla County.

Managerial Responsibilities


Contribute to the sector’s short- and long-term strategy from the Department's perspective in line with RCU overall vision and mission.


Develop the Department's strategy, objectives, KPIs annual operational plans and ensure plan execution is meeting the targets.


Prepare and submit the Department's annual budget for approval taking all planned activities and necessary investments into consideration by monitoring the financial performance.


Oversee the development, maintenance, implementation and adherence of the department policies and procedures as well as the overall performance of the department and ensure KPI’s are well developed, cascaded, communicated, and monitored.


Ensure effective staffing, professional development, and deployment of staff of the sector in consultation with the Sector Executive


Direct the Department's connection to its customers, whether internal or external, to ensure customer needs are met effectively.
